Anti-Aging Skin Care
Posted: Jun 03, 2008 | Category: BeautyAnti-ageing skin care products are very popular today; the growth in popularity is due in no small part to the fact that we are all living and working longer. This group of beauty products generally works by enabling the synthesis of collagen, the main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant in our body; collagen makes up approximately 25 percent of the total protein in the skin. This category of skin products is in fact related to another group of everyday products that help reduce the signs of aging; these are known as antioxidants which remove toxins from the body.
Although the benefits of vitamin C (an anti-oxidant) are well documented, it is still debated as to what our daily amount should be. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air.
To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. However, these anti-ageing skin care treatments are not as effective vitamin C based products, although vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants and have similar effects.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant and component of human blood whose purpose is to help increase the body’s immune system; it has many functions including inhibiting the formation of cancer cells. Lipoic acid, which is found inside every cell of the body, helps generate the energy that keeps us alive and functioning; an additional function is to repair skin damage caused by the normal aging process.
The use of plants has not been overlooked either with many types able to provide essences called phytochemicals which have proved successful in anti-ageing skin care products. A secondary but more important use of phytochemicals is the effect they have on the prevention of some strains of cancer; examples of these are:
- Prostate Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Cancer that attacks the Colon
All of which are on the increase globally.
Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti-ageing skin care products. The use of anti-ageing skin care products is a huge scientific field to research and has far greater potential than just producing goods that reduce the visible signs of age. Whilst a great deal has been learned about this subject, it is only the tip of the iceberg; with the number of genetic discoveries made in recent years, it is only a matter of time before conquering the effects of age is commonplace.
Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and better and cheaper anti-ageing skin care products will be produced. Scientific research into anti-aging products is still in the early stages but they should never be relied upon; it is doubtful if science can replace natural skin care remedies. Regular sleep patterns, exercise, a good healthy diet and less stress will all contribute to reducing the signs of ageing, for instance! And, if you are a man, you should checkout this.
